Birdwatching is a delightful hobby that brings nature's beauty right to your eyes. One of the most effective ways to attract different bird species to your yard is by offering the right foods. However, with so many bird seeds available, it can be tough to pick the perfect one for your choosy backyard birds. To make things easier, we've put together a simple guide to help you delight your lovely backyard feathered friends.

1. Hulled Sunflowers Seed

It is the favorite food for most wild birds. There are several reasons why they prefer to eat such food.

Hulled sunflower seeds are rich in fats, proteins, and other essential nutrients. These provide a high-energy food source, which is especially important for birds, as they require a lot of energy for activities like flying and staying warm.

Without the shell, hulled sunflower seeds are easier for birds to eat. Birds don't have to expend extra energy or time removing the husks, making it a more efficient food source.

Hulled seeds are more easily digestible for birds. This means they can quickly and efficiently absorb the nutrients from the seeds.

2. Black Oil Sunflower Seed

Black oil sunflower seeds are rich in fat, providing a high-energy food source, especially important during colder months or breeding season when birds need extra energy.

These seeds have thinner shells compared to other types of sunflower seeds, making them easier for birds to crack open and eat.

A wide variety of bird species enjoy black oil sunflower seeds, including cardinals, chickadees, finches, nuthatches, and sparrows

Mourning Dove and Eurasian Collared-Dove like this food very much . So,if you want to attract these birds , you could have a try.

3. Cracked Corn

Cracked corn is a popular food choice for many ground-feeding birds and those that frequent platform feeders.

It ranks as the third most economical bird food, following sunflower seeds and cracked peanuts. Among the 98 bird species that visit feeders in North America, 48 species (48.9%) are known to favor cracked corn. These species include doves, pigeons, quails, jays, finches, and sparrows.

However, cracked corn also attracts bully birds such as starlings, cowbirds, grackles, and house sparrows. Due to the presence of these aggressive species, some bird lovers might avoid offering cracked corn.

4. Peanut Hearts (cracked)

Peanut hearts are also a highly nutritious and favored food for birds. Contrary to common belief, peanuts are legumes produced by the peanut plant (Arachis hypogaea), not true nuts. They are rich in oils and fats, making them an excellent energy source, particularly during the colder fall and winter months.

Birds are offered peanuts in various forms, including peanut hearts and peanuts in the shell. Additionally, peanuts can be provided as peanut butter, either pure or mixed with bird seeds.

Peanut hearts are highly favored by a variety of bird species, including jays, sparrows, finches, woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, brown creepers, and Eastern and Western bluebirds. Similarly, peanut butter is particularly enjoyed by chickadees, titmice, wrens, brown creepers, and woodpeckers.
